Passages was an exhibition by abstract oil painter Lulu Weide, narrating her experience of transportation and transformation. Each painting is a portal into ethereal realms where the language spoken is colour and the environment is sensed through texture and scale. Her birthplace of Southeast London and her Swedish maternal roots guide her interest in colour and natural environments. Lulu is not interested in capturing one specific moment, but taking fragments from places and feelings once felt -- the line of a long, drawn-out brush stroke may take her back to her childhood spent playing in the river in Ladywell park; a bleak blue hiding in the corner of a painting can spark memories of a cold New Years on Blythe Hill. Although she references personal experience, Lulu intends for her work to act as a passageway for viewers to access their own emotions and apply their own meaning.

Lulu is fascinated with the shapeshifting ability of oils, the untamable nature of paint driving her practice: Using a combination of oil paint, pastels and sticks, Lulu creates movement in all directions and makes suggestions with figurative shapes and indistinct forms. Intuition is a crucial part of the artist’s practice; each painting forming a narrative of its own over the course of its making. The result is a vibrant, energetic yet gentle, melancholic invitation for viewers to connect with memory and place.

Lulu Weide graduated from the University of Brighton in 2024 with a degree in BA Fine Art Painting. She exhibits her work regularly, most notably at the graduates’ exhibition at the Royal Overseas League of Arts in 2024, the Jackson’s Art Prize exhibition in 2025, and the Galleria Objets in 2026. Lulu’s painting ‘Never Been to Stone Henge’ was awarded the Jackson’s Art Prize Judge’s Choice award by curator Hugo Barclay, one of just 23 winners selected from 12,964 submissions.
