FALLING, FALLEN.is a site-specific, collaborative installation by Sarah Crossfield and Caroline Burgess. Spotting a symbiosis in their work, FABRIQ introduced the artists just 6 weeks ago and invited them to “take over” the space for its final exhibition of 2025. Filling the gallery’s 3m² with texture, movement, sound and shadow, the installation is a delicate dialogue between the artists’ practices and themes.
Working in three dimensions and the abstract, Sarah and Caroline experiment with texture, form and material. Crossfield’s steel mesh “Falling” creates fleeting moments of motion to explore themes of change, impermanence and the inevitable passing of time. While in “Fallen”, Burgess sculpts handmade textile to convey a sense of loss and loneliness, a response to relentless world events and their impact on innocent women and children. Though the artists explore different themes, they share a soft yet striking presence; the quiet power and strength found in vulnerability.
Through a highly iterative and collaborative process, the works were shaped and refined in response to each other and the space. Drawing the eye around the gallery, Falling, Fallen. guides the viewer through a cycle of lightness and weight, decay and regeneration.
Sarah Crossfield is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Brockley. She
received a Bachelor of Fine Art (Hons) from The Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford University. She has exhibited widely, including at Gerald Moore Gallery, Bankside Gallery, Mall Galleries. She was awarded the L. Cornelissen & Son Prize and is the organizer of Brockley Open Studios. @sarah_crossfield
Caroline Burgess is a sculptor and installation artist, studying on the MASS Sculpture programme in Woolwich. She has exhibited widely, including in the Royal Academy summer exhibition, the Royal West of England Academy Open and the London Group Open. She was recently awarded the Sculpture Prize at the 12th Art
